Nijmegen Studies in Thanatology Volume 6 An empirical
				exploration of religion and death
 The search for meaning in
later life: An empirical exploration of religion and death draws
on thorough qualitative and quantitative research among older
Dutch adults. The scarcity of vital narratives of ageing and the
fragmentation of religious `grand narratives' appear to
complicate their search for meaning. Moreover, increased
longevity and the medicalisation of death challenge many older
adults to decide about the right timing of death. This study
qualitatively and quantitatively explores narratives of ageing
and of religion expressed by older Dutch adults and their
attitudes toward death, euthanasia and life prolongation.

Empirical and Practical Religious Studies of the Radboud
				University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands.

Nijmegen Studies in Thanatology Volume 5 Ritual practices
and situational beliefs of the recently bereaved in the
				Netherlands .
This book on death rites and situational
beliefs in the Netherlands offers valuable insight in the ways
in which the recently bereaved make sense of a death. It shows
how people seek and create meaning by reinventing ritual
repertoires and by re-imagining afterlife beliefs. Attention is
given to the changing role of religion, the co-creation of
personalised funerals, and to innovation in cremation and
remembrance practices. By demonstrating how people transform
their relationship with the deceased through material practices,
this study emphasises the widely-overlooked dynamics of
				continuing bonds.

 Brenda Mathijssen is a postdoctoral
researcher at the University of Reading (UK). She did her
doctoral research at Radboud University in Nijmegen (The

Nijmegen Studies in Thanatology Volume 4
 Considered
one of the most irreligious countries in the world, in spite of
continued religious affiliation of the majority of the
population, Denmark is an important case to explore the limits
of secularization. This study challenges the secularization
thesis from the perspective of lived religion, innovatively
examining death-related behaviour and hitherto overlooked
religion in relation to organ donation, churchyard design, grave
				visiting rituals and graveyard photographs.

Nijmegen Studies in Thanatology Volume 3 This
study on the common practice of Islamic death rites in the
Netherlands affords valuable insights in the lived religion of
Muslims. Particularly in a small town context, marked by
migration and diversity, Muslims are challenged to re-imagine
and reinvent their ritual repertoires. This results in dynamic
ritual practices that are the product of vibrant negotiation
processes, in which rites interact with ritual actors and their
(changing) contexts. These emerging ritual repertoires and their
dynamics are widely overlooked in the study of an
				institutionalised, traditional religion like Islam.

In

Nijmegen Studies in Thanatology Volume 1: In this volume scholars in the broad, interdisciplinary field of
thanatology afford valuable insights in changing European death
ways. The first part presents studies on a conceptual level for
various aspects of death studies. In a second segment different
European societies are compared on a national level, while in
the final part religious beliefs, attitudes, practices and other
worldview-related issues are covered. In this book countries,
disciplines and worldviews meet, providing a framework and
starting a profound comparative dialogue on challenges the field
is confronted with. A framework, we also hope that will be
expanded by many scholars and be useful for practitioners.
The Centre for Thanatology (Radboud University Nijmegen)
conducts research into socio-cultural and religious aspects of
				death, dying and bereavement.
